It has been a while since I advocated for you to get involved in city government.

Here is my reminder for you to go to the source in order to stay informed.  One of the sources is the City's website for upcoming and past meetings.  There you can find the read aheads for committee meetings and the general council meetings.  You can also find the minutes from past…

Montgomery County 2013 Candidates List

Music Center Cost Analysis

The first analysis of the costs associated with the Music Center Management Agreement can be found in the issues section "The Heights and the Music Center".  My initial calculations using the least costly way to manage the project would have saved the city more than $120,000 per year of the projected $315,000 per year management cost.

This is a neat way to write out my thoughts

Tonight City Council will approve two contracts during the Council Meeting.

The no bid / no solicitation contract between the city and Ken Conaway LLC is available as a read ahead.  The fees involve include a .95% Project Management Fee (expected to total .0095 * $16,500,000 = $156,750) plus a Project Service Fee of $16,466.67 a month in order to gain rights to Mr. Conaway's time for at least…

Research for Music Center

Below is the info I have gathered.

  1.  Amphitheater 101
  2.  List of Contemporary Amphitheaters.
    •
I started looking through this list and found it difficult, at best, to find the exact same conditions that this city wants.  I asked for info from just those who built their amphitheater with these key components in mind.
  1. Built for economic growth
  2. Location
  3. Population in Urban

I figure out how to get member posts to show up without my intervention.  If you create a profile you can post to a lot of different sections of the site without me having to approve comments.  Obviously, the desire is productive comments that will lead to better government.  Everyone can post comments as a guest but I have to look at those first.

Executive Session - School and City - When are they appropriate?

Saturday Feb 2, 2013 the school board will hold an executive session probably to discuss the upcoming negotiations with the teacher's union.  Is this appropriate?  Both the city and the school board always go into executive sessions for employment discussions. The school and the city are allowed to hold these discussions in executive sessions.  Read ORC 121.22 you'll see they are not required…

Traffic Signal Study requested

I was ruled out of order in last night's city council mtg! I asked whose campaign I needed to contribute to in order to get a study done for a traffic light at Charlesgate and Old Troy. With that said an older man can get up and say I hate all foreigners and he thinks they should all be thrown out of the US in last month's council meeting, yet THAT'S not out of order. Mayor said that we should just "overlook" his statements. Really?!…

New City Manager & other agenda items for Jan 28th council meeting

The agenda for Monday's Council Meeting is posted on the city's website on the Meeting Information and Audio page  Don't forget you can watch the meeting live over the internet (the link only works during the meeting) or you can watch a recording once it is posted a couple days after the meeting. Of course you can always go to city hall Monday night and participate.

As the article title tells you council plans on appointing a new city manager.

Notes from Administration Committee Meeting 22 Jan 13

I realized the other day that there have been no committee discussions about possibly raising the income tax.  The DDN tells us council was thinking about it. Council would have to vote at a council meeting to do this and it would have to be done prior to Feb 6th if they wanted it to appear on the May ballot.  The only regularly scheduled council meeting before Feb 6th is on Jan 28th.

Victoria's Italian Cuisine marches with JROTC

Update --- The Ch 7 story is scheduled to play at 11:00pm Tonight Sunday Jan 20th 2013

I just got a call from Mindy Proctor and she told me Victoria's Italian Cuisine has committed to donate 10% of their Sunday proceeds in order to make sure Wayne High School students have the opportunity to participate in JROTC.  The restaurant plans to continue this program until the newly formed foundation raises enough money to keep JROTC.

Accounting changes from the 14 Jan 2013 council meeting

Update: The council meeting was not useful in understanding the $600,000 loan from the Fire Capital Fund to the Fire Operating Fund. It was also not useful in understanding the accounting change. However, I broke down and made personal inquiries. As always the city staff and the council members were helpful and the one on one information was informative.  But what good is it if only one person outside council knows "the reason" while the rest of the community has to guess?

I often wonder what's right and what's wrong, and if there really is a right and wrong. Then I go into politics, and it just confuses my twenty-one year old mind. With politics I feel that everyone seems to be competing for their own ideals and never for for the people's ideas or beliefs. Then there are those politicians who are neither; in fact those politician are "parents". These "parents"…

Filing date for running for Council and Mayor is Feb 6, 2013

I received a call from the Board of Elections yesterday.  The correct date for filing petitions to run for Mayor or City Council is Feb 6, 2013.  I do not know why the date was moved 15 days earlier than the first date that was put out but I heard it may have been a calculation error by one of their employees (as opposed to the state moving the date).

Also in an earlier post I wrote that…

Committee meeting agendas

The agenda's for Jan 8th Public Works & Administration Committee meetings have been posted. Of interest:

All of the Administration Committee that starts at or about 6 pm will be interesting. Of course it is scheduled to start with an Executive Session.  Note my long standing contention that most of these land acquisition discussions don't meet the requirement needed for an executive session

School Levy details discussed Thurs at Wayne - updated post meeting

Update  (21Dec12)- also see comments after the post;

There was a big turnout at Wayne Thursday evening.  The Board chose to table the school administration's recommendation on $6.3 million of cuts.  The board chose to ask the voters to approve a 9.95 mil propery tax increase. Ms. Gunnell will respond to the State's letter by the Dec 31st deadline.  In that response she will tell the state the…

City does it again.  Voted tonight to spend money on another projec…

Tonight Monday Dec 10th 2012 residents learned about a proposed Music Center the city plans on building. Five minutes later council voted to spend $100,000 in order to commission a study that will tell them to commence with a project where they have already settled on the major details. This is a familiar story to the Aquatic center and the original disclosure of "The Heights Project".  As you…

School Board Funding Workshop Sat Dec 8, 2012 at Studebaker.

The school board and administration have been holding meetings trying to figure out what to do about the school budget shortfall.  This is another event.  It looks like we will find out structure and agenda items when we get there.  Below is the meeting notice copied from the City Schools website.  Again, it wasn't easy to find and does not appear on the calendar or upcoming events.

Notes from Public Works Dec 4, 2012 meeting

  • State Route 4 – Speed Limit Increase  -- The city is on the way to change the current speed limit in the section near I-70 from 50mph to 60mph
  • United Water – Not To Exceed Amount
  • City Water and Sewer Projects -  During discussions council mentioned there exists a chart that ranks possible city water projects.  This should be available from city staff if you ask for it.  If you get a copy

Another exciting city project & did the city really borrow $18 mill…

Last night, Dec 4th, city council members received a presentation on another exciting project for the city.  However, this presentation was done in executive session.  As a reminder Ohio's Sunshine law tells us that in order to go into executive session to discuss the purchase of land the council must believe that "premature disclosure of information would give an unfair competitive or…
