Information from the mayor needs to be accurate

I just got finished reading the unsigned editorial in the Jan 1st edition of the Huber Heights Courier titled "Information from the mayor needs to be accurate" found in the "Your View" section.  The unidentified author says, "It is an unfortunate event that McMasters, in his elected position as Mayor of Huber Heights, distributed inaccurate information.  It is his responsibility as mayor to be sure he has the correct information".  I reject this claim.  No responsible member of this community or employee of the Huber Heights Courier should fault me for publicizing the official public record or not knowing that council is making backroom decisions.

These are the items that residents should know that refute the unidentified authors contention that I should have done more:

1) I initiated conversations on this TIF numerous times from the day it was proposed in the summer, all the way through December 9th.  These overtures went unanswered.

2)  The only official public notice to the School District discussed in an open public meeting was sent on Dec 1st.  This notice declared the City planned to divert 75% of the School property tax to the City.

3)  There were no committee or council meetings schedule before the scheduled vote on the creation of the TIF.  Time was of the essence to get this issue out in the public view.

4) Some council members chose to discuss the TIF via emails.  These council members did not include me in that discussion.  Council changed their minds and adopted what I was seeking.  This change was not discussed in an open public meeting and council made the change in an unofficial manner without informing either me or the public.

Could I have done more?  Now that I think about it, if I had sent a notice out to council and staff that I was planning to distribute that Flyer someone probably would have let me know council changed their mind. But can any responsible member of this community or employee of the Huber Heights Courier really fault me for publicizing the official public record or not knowing that council is making back room decisions outside the public view?
